CENSORSHIP 2002

Meeting Report: July 19 - 21

John Grabowski was our intrepid host for a fine weekend in July 2002 when the CCSG met in Minneapolis-St.Paul for the Minnesota 2002 Stamp Show. John did a fine job of ferrying us around the various locations.

On Thursday evening John held a barbecue at his house for the early arrivals who had come in by car and flown from such place as New York, Washington, Indianapolis, Chicago and England. Later we were transported to the show hotel for a well deserved rest. Early nest day those with exhibits were brought to the show to mount their exhibits and get an (unofficial) early look at the dealers stock.

The CCSG booth was manned most of the time with a large selection of books for sale brought in by Tony Brooks and Chuck LaBlonde. Lots of interesting conversation took place at the booth about many censorship subjects over the next days.

The dinner on Friday evening was at a local Italian restaurant where our editor's birthday was celebrated with an appropriate dessert and a goodly amount of liquid refreshment.

Mike Mead, Britannia Stamps, also joined our dinner

Saturday was the day of the announcement of the awards and the CCSG members did well with Peter Flynn winning the Grand Award as well as the CCSG Friendship Award. Two other members received Gold awards as well as several other Vermeil and Silver medals in the General Class. There were also two One-Frame exhibits that both received Vermeil medals. All details are on the main page.

Saturday also saw a CCSG general meeting where some general society business was transacted and topics of interest were discussed. The awards ceremony was followed by another private CCSG dinner at a Greek restaurant where Alex was able to converse with the owner in Greek but we never found out if this meant that we received better or worse service.

The final day started late with several members sharing their exhibits with fellow censor collectors at their frames and this was following by another CCSG meeting where we had an in depth discussion how to get better attendance at show like this in the future and Chuck took on several ideas for finding answers to the questions posed by issuing a questionnaire for members.

This was followed by a short talk on Postal Censorship and the Internet given by Karl Winkelmann who shows several web pages from the CCSG site as well as a selection of web pages that other collectors have put on the Internet on diverse censorship subjects.

We all look forward to meeting in England in 2003 and in Washington in 2006.
