Africa: First World War and Beyond

Peter Burrows showed various WW1 items including printed postal stationery from Napier POW camp, South African form POW10 and various other printed stationery (including change of address), Southern Rhodesian cards of the Tobacco Growers & People of Southern Rhodesia.

Michael Goodman showed WW1 items from South West Africa - started with postcards from German forces in SW Africa and included Army Base PO South Africa 6 & 6A postmarks as well as South African unnamed datestamps numbered 4-6.

Alistair Kennedy put up items from South African forces in SW Africa, BAPO No 7, modified TPO postmarks, a cover from Italian forces in Libya, from WW1 these included a couple of naval covers from ships off Sierra Leone, mail from the British forces in Cameroon's in columns sent from Nigeria and an item of mail from one of two French columns to enter the Cameroon's.

Michael Dobbs showed a number of items including British forces in Kenya (mainly unit cachets on mail sent via civil post), Indian FPOs from UN in Congo, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and a single item from the UN Mission in Sierra Leone. He also showed his extensive researches into British Army unit establishments in Kenya, British/International military involvement in Sierra Leone, Somalia and Rwanda.

Peter O'Keeffe showed mail from Rhodesian forces during the internal conflict 1968-80 - unit cachets on the front of mail indicated free postage. Cachets on reverse meant postage had to be paid.

Ed Hall displayed Egyptian mails including the Egyptian Army in Yemen, an item censored by the Egyptian secret police (c.1960's) 1973 handstamps from the Second Sinai Army, and British and French mails from the Suez campaign. In a second display Ed showed a variety of material from more recent conflicts in Africa - Congo 1960's, Nigerian civil war 1967-70 (both Nigerian and Biafran forces), Portuguese military mail from Angola, Mozambique 1969-75, Cuban involvement in Angola, South African military mail from Angola and UNITA stamps. Also shown were items from Namibia, UN operations in Somalia (1993-95) and the conflict in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe 1965-70 (including invalid Rhodesian stamps, British Military Advisory & Training Team and Rhodesian Army mail).

John Davis showed items from the civilian post office at Cairo, used by the military, WW1 to 1924 using datestamps inscribed Military Post Office Cairo, the British Barracks, Cairo (1913) and the British Camp P.O. Maadi. Also British Barracks Abbassia. A number of items displayed expanded upon the information contained in Firebrace's book "British Empire Campaigns and Occupations in the Near East, 1914-24".

Nick Colley displayed a postcard depicting the Kohningsberg sinking the Pegasus, items from the Naval Squadron from South Africa, naval mails from ships along the East African coast, WW2 naval mail from Greenland to East Africa and the RAF at Madagascar. Also a WW1 item from the British Tanganyika Squadron censored by the Assistant Paymaster, a unique WW2 RAF triangular censor used on Mombasa postmarked EA APO 66 in 1942 and WW2 RAF items from Somaliland.

Keith Tranmer showed items which included material from The Dorset Yeomanry 1914-18 (who had returned to Egypt from Gallipoli), WW2 Eritrea 1943-44, American FPOs on Libyan stamps, Italian stamps overprinted by the British Military Administration and British Military mail in Libya (late 1950's to early 1960's period).

Peter High showed hospital ships which included 1911-13 Italian war with Turkey, Italian hospital ships used for repatriation in connection with the 1936 Ethiopian campaign (Vienna, Tevese and Aquilega), WW1 British hospital ships serving off the East African coast, WW2 hospital ships including the Oxfordshire (a Christmas dinner menu card), Karapara and Dorsetshire.
