50th Anniversary "All-Day" Meeting and Lunch
at:
Union Jack Club
Sandell Street

The format for the day will be as follows:

Morning Session

- The meeting to commence at 10.30 am in the Gasgoine Room
- There will be static display in the morning - unless we have sufficient "non-regulars" to warrant more formal displays with talking when it will be up to 16 sheets amd 10 minutes talking
- 11 am tea & coffee

Lunch - 12 noon - 2 pm:

Lunch in the Union Jack Club Dinning Room for those who have pre-booked (cost approx £15 - £20)

Afternoon Session

- 2 pm start: 30 minute display of Gallipoli by our President, Keith Tranmer
A half hour display and talk and not just the home side, come and see something of the French, Turks, Germans and Austrians. Find out who commanded the South Lancashire's on the Sari Bair Ridge with the 6th Gurkha Rilfes that August morning and did the Sandringham Company disappear at Suvla. Listen while I read an account of a soldier who gave Brigadier Napier 'the leg up' which led to his death during the landing at 'V' Beach on that eventful 25th April 1915. See for yourself some photographs and letters of men who played their part in the failure to defeat Turkey and their Allies.- 2.30 pm: tea & coffee

- Members displays: up to 16 sheets and 10 minutes talking on any related Forces subject
(priority will be given to "non-regulars" at our London meetings)

"All-Day" Happenings

- Book sale by Peter High (Postal History 2000)
- Members "bring and buy" bourse
- "Bring along your queries" - we will have a wealth of talent available throughout most of the day to try and provide answers to your queries
- Society Library: if requested at least one week in advance, and provided he has sufficient room,

50th Anniversary Souvenir Booklet

A special souvenir booklet has been produced to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Forces Postal History Society. The booklet contains 25 short articles on various aspects of forces postal history from 1813 (Dartmoor Prison to hold French Prisoners of War) to 2000 (British troops in Bosnia-Herzegovina).

Other aspects of forces postal history include New Brunswick 1862, Boer War, a Turkish hospital ship 1915, Holzminden POW camp 1919, Colditz 1940, Burma 1942-43, Vis 1943, North Korea 1952 and much more. Each article is illustrated with an appropriate cover in colour.

The booklet also lists the principal officers of the Society since 1952, a history of the Society based on notes penned by the late George Crabb and a listing of the President's Cup and other Award winners.

The booklet was issued free to Society members at the Anniversary weekend away in May and will be distributed to other members with their Summer Newsletter.

50th Anniversary Society Weekend Away

on 10th - 12th May 2002.

The event will be held at Chatham, Kent home of the Royal Engineers Museum. The Royal Engineers ran the British Forces Postal Service and its forerunner the Army Postal Service from 1882 until that function was taken over by the Royal Logistic Corps on 1 April 1992. The Society has negotiated favourable rates with The King Charles Hotel, Brompton Road, Chatham (less than two minutes walk away from the Museum) and some of the main proceedings will be focused on the Museum.

The provisional timetable for the weekend will be as follows:

Friday

    arrive at Hotel during the evening; the cost includes dinner

Saturday

    Meeting in the Royal Engineers Museum morning - look around the exhibits at the Museum lunchtime - we are investigating the possibility of a buffet style lunch in the Officers Mess in Brompton Barracks opposite (this is an operational military barracks and certain security measures will have to be complied with)

    afternoon - Society meeting in a functions room at the Museum(there will still be an opportunity to look around the Museum for those that wish to)

    evening - dinner at the Hotel (private dinning area)

Sunday

    The King Charles Hotel

    morning - Presidents' Cup competition in Conference Room at the Hotel coffee / biscuits provided

    lunchtime - set Sunday lunch at the Hotel

    afternoon - informal gathering and displays in the Conference Room and/or depart


The cost for the weekend (excluding travel to/from the Hotel) is:

    Double / twin rooms £75 (seventy-five UK pounds Sterling) per person, based on two sharing

    Single rooms £95 (ninety-five UK pounds Sterling) per room
