Contract Air Mail Route No. 34 Inaugural Date: October 25, 1930 New York - Los Angeles Transcontinental and Western Air’s (later TWA / Trans World Airways) Contract Air Mail Route 34 service was known as the Central Transcontinental Route and was scheduled to become operative simultaneously with Contract Air Mail Route 33, but the airline was not ready. This was a passenger route as well as a mail route. Since the airway was not fully lighted for night flying, Kansas City was the operational layover city. The route was inaugurated in two major sections between the East Coast and the West Coast: New York to Kansas City, and Los Angeles to Kansas City. When Transcontinental and Western Air inaugurated Contract Air Mail Route 34 service on October 25, 1930, the airway was not fully lighted for night flying. On April 20, 1931, Transcontinental & Western Air began the first 24-hour coast-to-coast all-air mail service with night flying and a change of planes in Kansas City, Missouri using 6-passenger, open-cockpit Northrop Alphas with cruising speed of 150 MPH.

According to the above POD Notice, Post Office Department, dated October 6, 1930, this flight was still scheduled for inauguration on October 15.
