Show & Tell - February 2001
NASSAU, N.P., BAHAMAS TO MIAMI, FLORIDA Two U.S. Navy seaplanes commanded by Lieutenant Cummings of the Marine Flying Squadron of the Dinner Key Naval Air Station, flew successfully from Nassau to Miami. The two hydroplanes had previously landed in Nassau's harbour on Tuesday afternoon, January 28, 1919, needing only a little more than 2.5 hours flying time from Miami, Florida. The planes carried two bags with about 600 pieces of mail, mostly postcards. While the P.O.D. did not direct the trip -- this first aerial mail on the return flight did receive special cachets and postal cancellations et the points of dispatch and destination and was accorded regular mail delivery treatment. Above cover posted in Nassau, Bahamas 29 Jan 1919, struck again on 30 Jan 1919. Hardly visible flight cachet just below adhesives reads 'BY AIR SERVICE / NASSAU TO MIAMI'. Another light cachet at top left under bank information reads 'NASSAU N.P, (Bahamas Islands)'. Miami backstamp dated Jan 30, 1919.
